CREATIVE GROUNDS @ ANTHONY OVERTON 8x3: ART + ARCHITECTURE MEET THE TEAMS

Celebration on SaturdaySeptember 22 from 4-9pm.

I am excited to have two very enthusiastic young artists on my team for this project at Anthony Overton this Summer. Learn about how our team came together, brainstormed, and shared thoughts about “Whose Mural is it Anyway?” as we explored the thought processes of the Art Club core group members in the summer of 2007, and how and why they came up with the design for “I Am Amazing” mural project at Anthony Overton CPS.

Kayla Spears from Dallas, Tx, visiting Chicago for the summer.
Kayla Spears is a young aspiring artist from Dallas, Texas, specializing in acrylic, watercolor, pencil, and colored pencil. Her artistic style concentrates on semi-realistic portraits using the mediums above. In addition to this, she is open to creating pieces that explore abstraction, landscapes, and fashion design concepts. Kayla has recently discovered that portraits are subjects that she enjoys making the most because individuality is something that she values. She hopes to encourage those to take pride in who they are and find comfort in their own uniqueness by creating art. Furthermore, by working on this project, she hopes that she will be able to advocate artist rights when it comes to preserving one’s artwork and gain further experience with creating art that is open to public viewing.

On February 26, 2018, Kayla participated in the VASE (Visual Arts Scholastic Event) Art Competition. She was the only student, out of the 15 entries from her district, who advanced to the state level accompanied by a score of IV (Superior), the highest rating. At the April 28th state event, she also received a score of IV (Exemplary), the second-highest to a V (Gold Seal). Other competitions and exhibitions she participated in include: The Congressional Art Competition, where she submitted her self-portrait titled, “Kayla” and the Desoto Art League Spring Showcase, where she displayed two of her pieces titled “Battement” and “Meditation”. She will also be serving as the Vice President at her school’s art club at DeSoto High School for the 2018-2019 school year.

I developed an appreciation and love of art very early. My Grandfather’s extensive Art Collection greatly influenced my passion for art. In addition to the works of Jackson Pollock who periods in art were abstract expressionism, modern art, and action painting. Mark Richard Bryant, a grandmother’s friend, attended the art institute and was a poetry writer. Salvador Dali’s periods in art were surrealism, expressionism, Impressionism, realism, and cubism. My art style is Modern art; however, other styles are emerging as I continue drawing and painting. For example, I am currently working on a Pastel Sketch titled “The Pagoda.” One of my recently completed work “Two faces” was used, as a cover on Birthday Cards for the company “Love Leathers.”
