Renée Baker,founding music director and conductor of the internationally acclaimed Chicago Modern Orchestra Project, has composed more than 2,000 works for ensembles, including numerous commissioned pieces/film scores for the Chicago Sinfonietta, and the Chicago Sinfonietta Chamber Ensemble, Berlin international Brass, CASTLE OF OUR SKINS, PEK' Contemporary Project Berlin, Joffrey Ballet Chamber Series, UC IRVINE Clair Trevor Center, Galerie B1 Berlin, Chicago Symphony AAN, IU CINEMA, Krannert Art Center, Symphony Center Chicago, Black Film Center Archives, South Shore Cultural Center, Fulton Street Artspace, Ebertfest International Film Festival, Northwest film forum/Portland Art Museum, Stockwerk/Graz, Studio Movie Grill Chicago, DuSable Museum, Gray Center UC, Earshot Jazz Festival Seattle, Experimental Sound Studio, DANK-HAUS, Blank Slate Theory Chicago, Resistor Chicago, Dominican University, Japanese Culture Center Chicago, Kuhlspot Social Club Berlin, Museum of Fine Art-St Petersburg Fl, Black Cinema House, MCA CHICAGO, UC Logan Arts Center, Dance Wright Project SF, and many others.
In composing for silent cinema, she has created, through the usage of transcultural aesthetics, cutting-edge original scores for more than 200 silent classic films and performed her work at live screening events, film festivals with orchestras and ensembles across the globe. Baker's film score recordings include BODY AND SOUL (1925), BROKEN BLOSSOMS (1919),WOMEN OF RYAZAN (1927), AN ORPHAN (1929), Birth of a Nation (1915), A Natural Born Gambler (1916), The Scar of Shame (1927) DW GRIFFITH Birth of a Nation (1914)and The Bluebird (1918), to name a few. Her own experimental forays into surrealistic filmmaking have resulted in 30 one hour films entitled OUTEREXTREMIA Artfilm Cinema series, currently being screened around the country and abroad in alternative cinema locations.
Ms. Baker is the creator of BrynIndie Film Société, OUTEREXTREMIA ART FILMS, CINEPUR Film Festival, Relinquish Media, Wabi House Media, ALTPARALLEL Cinema, FluXus Chamber Films, Moving Score Films, 27 Pavilion Films, and creator of Spomenici ArtCinema in collaboration with Macedonia based internationally acclaimed photographer Giulio Zanni.
Working at the fringes of art, film, collage and video in a Fluxus- infused oeuvre, film letter exchanges, narrative collage/assemblages, paint exploratoriums, she is redefining the visual archive, challenging authority and what it means to be black, fueling the acceptance of ethnicity, womanness superiority, Afro post future, and cinema confessions.
