City of Altars is a documentary that follows the narratives of 5 arts organizations: The Latino Center, Sol Collective, Taller Arte del Nuevo Amanecer, and the Washington Neighborhood Center, as they offer free altar-making workshops to the community. The core of this documentary explores the celebration of Día de los Muertos, what it means to Sacramento and neighboring communities, and how people can learn more about celebrating Día de los Muertos.
This was a fantastic opportunity to showcase how we celebrate the lives of those passed on to our ancestors. T'Chaka Muhmmand represented the Sojourner Truth African Heritage Museum in the documentary. His family will be celebrating his life on November 9th, 2024. He was 82 at the time of his passing. He was able to participate in his final Kwanzaa celebration in 2023. This documentary will help continue with parts of his legacy, which he passed on to our ancestors.
Created with funding from the California Arts Council and the City of Sacramento.
